Workshops

Pre-Conference workshops were offered on Tuesday April 14th as an opportunity to explore selected topics in greater depth. There was also a session just for Math Recovery Leaders on Friday afternoon, April 17th focused on the updates to the Math Recovery Intervention Specialist course. See below for details.

Concurrent Afternoon Sessions, 1:00 - 4:30:

Friday Afternoon Workshop for MR Leaders (Click for details)

AM1- “Don’t Tell Me!  What It’s Like to be a Learner in Math Recovery”

Presenter: James Martland, United Kingdom (James Martland co-authored the original Math Recovery books)
Price: $95
Description: This workshop is practical and interactive.  The aim is to place the participants in the position of a learner, albeit at an adult level.  By examining and reflecting upon how we construct an understanding we can discuss the role that language and imagery plays.  We will explain a mathematical concept and record our growing confidence in its acquisition.  The experience will be used to tackle areas of difficulty young children experience in early numeracy.  The workshop is only open to NEW members of the MR community and others who have not experienced it before.

AM2- “Pedagogical Engineering:  Using the Green Book the Wright Way”

Presenters: Dr. Bob Wright, Adjunct Professor, Southern Cross University and Kurt Kinsey of Sheridan, WY
Price: $95
Description: An important goal in Math Recovery is to teach in the student's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). This involves aligning instruction with our hypothesis of the student's current arithmetical knowledge. This session will focus on a close examination of the MR pedagogical approach and planning for instruction.  Participants will discuss focus questions and investigate the use of key topics and the Instructional Framework in the design of instructional sequences. Planning will be considered at the macro level, drawing on the student's profile and portrait, and using the models (tables) of the LFIN, and at the micro level, within a teaching session, taking account of the student's responses to instructional tasks.

PM1- “Effective Integration of the LFIN with your Mathematics Textbook Series”

Presenter: Dara Glazer of Boulder, CO and Dee Swanson of Laramie, WY
Price: $95
Description: This is an opportunity to have the time to develop the skills needed to ‘unpack a unit’ and effectively integrate the LFIN with your mathematics textbook series. The workshop presents examples of how different districts have tackled this task. Participants will practice this skill and collaborate with others using the same textbook series. You will need to bring one grade level of your series, as we will not have copies of any textbooks.

PM2- “Learning to Think Mathematically with the Rekenrek”

Presenter: Jeff Frykholm, Associate Professor UC Boulder
Price: $95
Description: This workshop introduces the Rekenrek (aka "the arithmetic rack") as a powerful mathematical model for young learners (K-3) in the mathematics classroom. Participants will explore numerous examples of its power and elegance and will be provided findings of emerging research with young children. Specific lesson activities and objectives will be shared in an effort to encourange teachers to implement the Rekenrek into their instructional practices.

Friday Afternoon Workshop for MR Leaders
