SNAP Professional Development Course
What is the SNAP Professional Development Course?
SNAP (Student Numeracy Assessment Progressions) is the concise, diagnostic, individual assessment in early numeracy course that classroom teachers and special educators have been looking for! Click Here to download a brochure.
How does the SNAP Professional Development course work?
This two-day program draws from Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 year-olds by Wright, Stanger, Stafford, and Martland (2006).
The two-day SNAP training targets these goals:
- To put a concise, diagnostic assessment tool in the hands of classroom teachers and special educators.
- To raise teachers’ awareness of the multi-faceted nature of early numeracy.
- To enable teachers to differentiate instruction in early numeracy in their classrooms in order to meet the range of developmental needs of all students.
- To provide teachers with a formative assessment system for tracking individual, group and whole class growth in early numeracy.
- To provide teachers with exemplar instructional strategies.
Who Should Take SNAP?
SNAP is appropriate for all educators working with children who are functioning within the range of early numeracy concepts that are typically associated with kindergarten and first grade. The SNAP interview-style assessment results in data that indicate a child’s development along six progressions. These data are invaluable in planning instruction that differentiates for a range of student development on each progression. SNAP may also be used to identify children in need of more thorough diagnostic assessment and intervention (such as that provided by the Math Recovery Intervention Specialist program). The classroom summary profile folder provides clear direction for designing lessons that will ensure progress for each child.
How Much Does SNAP Cost?
Every effort has been made to ensure that this affordable, condensed, two-day professional development be accessible to teachers. It is hoped that districts would facilitate professional learning communities in which SNAP-trained educators could continue the critical dialogue that is only just begun during the training.
* $299 for each participant (Note: for In-District Contract Trainings, a minimum of eighteen (18) participants is required). Price includes all course materials and assessment kits.
* For those districts with a Certified SNAP Facilitator in place, the cost for course materials and assessment kits is $115 per person.
