Frequently Asked Questions

If you are interested in hosting a Math Recovery® Specialist course (Part One or Part Two), please contact the organization at courses@mathrecovery.org. There is a limit for the number of courses the organization can host every year. The selection of sites is based on several factors (e.g., geographical region, number of participants, adequate training space, etc.).
When thinking in terms of certification, the participant has up to two years to complete the necessary components. This timeline is applicable for both Math Recovery® Specialist, Part One and Math Recovery® Specialist, Part Two.  See the FAQs for more information about the difference between certification and course completion, along with the length of a Math Recovery® Specialist course.
Attendance and participation for each team meeting in Math Recovery® Specialist courses is important and expected. Meeting days and times are shared prior to the start of the course, allowing participants to arrange their schedules accordingly. Please work proactively if you know that you have a conflict with a team meeting by working with the course facilitator. In the event of an emergency, it is important to maintain communication with your facilitator.
Attendance at all virtual meetings and face-to-face days is required for these professional development experiences.
One-on-one coaching is offered throughout the Math Recovery Specialist courses.
  • Assessment coaching supports participants with assessment administration, coding/notating, and analysis.
  • Instructional coaching supports participants with where to go next instructionally with students.
Math Recovery® facilitators meet participants where they are at to support them in their Math Recovery® journey through coaching support.
There is no expectation to take both Math Recovery® Specialist courses. Participants will start with the first course (MRSp1). They have the choice to take the second course (MRSp2) if they find the content applicable to their learning.
The course length for Math Recovery® Specialist, Part One (MRSp1) is typically 9-12 months. Participants have up to two years to complete the components for certification or course completion. The course length for Math Recovery® Specialist, Part Two (MRSp2) is typically 6-9 months. Participants have up to two years to complete the components for certification or course completion.
Math Recovery® Specialist: Part One and Math Recovery® Specialist: Part Two have two different options for completion.

The first option is course completion. The course completion option provides flexibility for the educator who may have time constraints or role-specific needs. Course completion provides an opportunity for valuable learning within the MRSp courses while providing flexibility in meeting the requirements. Course completion allows for sufficient knowledge to support student learning without needing full certification.

The second option is certification. The certification option offers a deeper level of study and implementation for the educator who regularly provides one-on-one or small-group instruction. This option is also intended for those who are interested in pursuing Math Recovery® leadership opportunities (MRSp Leader or Add+VantageMR Champion). The certification process involves more comprehensive coursework, leading to a deeper understanding of Math Recovery® principles and practices. The certification process encourages continuous professional development and critical reflection, fostering ongoing growth, and improvement in your teaching practice.
The 100 teaching hours involves assessing and instructing students to apply course content in a one-on-one and small group setting.  The completion of the 100 teaching hours includes teaching cycles with one-on-one students for 50 to 80 hours, along with 20 to 50 hours of small group instruction.

The 100 teaching hours for the Math Recovery® Specialist: Part One course is applicable for those completing the certification option. For more information about certification, see the FAQs.
The 50 teaching hours involves assessing and instructing students with a variety of relevant course content in a one-on-one and/or small group setting. The completion of the 50 teaching hours includes one-on-one or small group work in addition and subtraction to 100 and multiplication and division. The US Math Recovery Council® recommends work with students at grade levels 3-5.

The 50 teaching hours for the Math Recovery® Specialist: Part Two course is applicable for those completing the certification option. For more information about certification, see the FAQs.
