Keep Looking! (Independent)
Purpose: Gain facility in recognizing and identifying numerals 1-10
Description: Students practice recognizing and identifying numbers while making matches by seeking out cards they need.
Players: 2-3
Directions
-
1
Shuffle and pass out three cards to each player. The rest of the cards are spread out, facedown, in the middle as a draw pile.
-
2
Before starting, players place down any matching pairs they have and replace cards from the draw pile, so they have three cards again.
-
3
When all players have three cards, they take turns either asking another player for a specific numeral card (one that matches one of their numeral cards) or putting one of their cards down in the pile and drawing a card to replace it.
-
4
If there is a match (either with the student being asked or from the card in the pile), the pair is placed down. All players replenish their hand, so they each have a total of 3 cards again. Players will hold the new cards until it is their turn again (If new pairs are found, they will wait until it is their turn).
-
5
If there is not a match made, when a card was drawn from the pile, it is returned. If a card was asked for from another player, they are told to “Keep Looking!”.
-
6
Play advances to the next player and continues until all pairs have been made.
Variations
If students are not able to hold their cards, provide a means for them to lay them on the floor without the cards being seen by other players (e.g., a divider such as a folder).
