CAMT Conference in Fort Worth, Texas
US Math Recovery® is on the road again, this time in Texas! The Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching takes place June 26-28, 2023. We are excited to be a part of the 500+ sessions during the event, both in-person and virtually. Be sure to stop and see us at Booth #504 or take in a session with one of our Math Recovery Specialists, Katie Leadbetter and Thuc-Khanh Park, on Tuesday and Wednesday. You can read more their presentations below.
Beyond Fluency to 20: The Power of Intentional Sequences to Build Fluency in Addition and Subtractions Within 100 and Beyond
Tuesday, June 27, 2023, 1 PM, Omni Sundance 2 with Katie Leadbetter
We can all agree that basic fact fluency in addition and subtraction within 20 is an important goal of the early grades, but addition and subtraction to 100 is...often-forgotten next step in the development of students' mental computation. In this session, we will explore the research-based learning trajectory, developed by Dr. Robert Wright and colleagues, that will support you in laying a foundation for your student's arithmetic learning. This session will identify essential skills students acquire as they develop a range of efficient and flexible mental computational strategies. We will analyze videos of student thinking and teacher moves to clarify our understanding of the domain of addition and subtraction within 100 while analyzing task selection and methods to move students forward. We will explore tools that, when used intentionally, will advance students learning in this domain.
The Road Not Taken: Children's Cognitive Development of Early Arithmetical Learning
Tuesday, June 27, 2023, 4 PM, Omni Sundance 6 with Thuc-Khanh Park
Students in the primary elementary grades learn how to add and subtract using the instructional approach of the CRA (concrete-representational-abstract) model. This journey ends up being a bumpy ride, and too many of our students are left stranded with a flat tire on the side of the road. Research has indicated that a bridge is needed to help our students reach the land of symbolic notation. Come and learn how to build this bridge in your classroom.
