Secret Number (Small Group)
Purpose: Identify numerals from 1-10
Description: Students identify a numeral when only seeing parts of it.
What To Say and Do
-
1
Tell students that there are numeral cards that have been cut up and they are going to work to figure out what number they are seeing when they only get to see parts of it.
-
2
Choose two puzzle pieces to display half of a number (bottom or top; left or right) and say:
- If this is the top of the number, what number could it be? Why?
- What number could it not be? Why?
- What would the part of the card that is missing look like?
- Trace on the table what the number would look like.
-
3
Show the other part of the number for students to confirm their predictions.
-
4
Repeat the activity with a new numeral.
-
5
Wrap up the conversation by having students identify all numerals 1-10.
Variations
Allow students to work with a partner to find the secret number.
