Build Your City (Independent)

Purpose: Extend part-whole knowledge of fractions

Description: Students identify the fractional part of the building that is shaded to build their city.

Players: 2

Materials

  • Build Your City Board (one per student)
  • Build Your City Cards
  • Student Directions

Directions

  • 1

    Each player gets a Build Your City Board. 

  • 2

    Shuffle the Build Your City Cards and place facedown as a draw pile.  

  • 3

    Players take turns drawing a card and identifying what fraction of the whole is shown. If the corresponding spot on their board is vacant and needs a building, the card is placed as the building in that spot. 

  • 4

    If the card drawn is not needed, it is discarded. 

  • 5

    The first player to get all the buildings of their city built, wins.
