Race to the Fraction Finish (Independent)
Purpose: Gain facility with determining same-sized fractions
Description: Students match two fraction numerals of the same size but with different names.
Players: 2
Directions
-
1
Players set up the activity by placing out the shuffled Race to the Fraction Finish Cards facedown and one Race to the Fraction Finish Board. Players will be working together to get one racer (unit fraction) to the finish first by filling in the four corresponding spots with same size fractions.
-
2
Player A turns a card over and determines which of the racers on the board is the same size. If Player B agrees, Player A places that fraction card in the first space of that racer’s row.
-
3
Player B takes a turn.
-
4
Players continue to alternate turns until one racer reaches the finish line with all four fractions in place.
Variations
Provide each student with their own board and set of cards to see who can get a racer to the finish line first.
