Around the Horn: Forward and Backward (Large Group)
Purpose: Develop fluency with number word sequences involving multiples of 10
Description: Students rehearse the verbal sequence counting by 10s, saying the next number of the sequence in turn.
Materials

What To Say and Do

Have students move into a circle.

Establish norms for procedures such as rotation of turns and responding to students who get stuck or make errors.

Say, “Let's count by 10s. I’ll start us off and when we reach 100, the next person gets to start over with 10.”

Repeat the process using a backward sequence by 10s (100, 90, 80, ...)
Variations
Extend to rehearsing the sequence by 10s off the decuple (8, 18, 28, …).
Extend the sequence beyond 100 counting by 10s both on the decuple and off the decuple.
